Encyclopedia of North American Railroads
Middleton, Smerk & Diehl • £49.95 • (A)

At 1281 pages and all but 3kgs in weight, this is the heck of a book, containing huge quantities of information on most aspects of railroading in North America. However it is a reference book, and whilst it is well illustrated, the bulk of the information is written, rather than pictorial. That said, anyone with an interest in the subject should have a copy on their (suitably strengthened) bookshelf. Hardbound. Indiana University Press

Baltimore & Ohio Steam Locomotives The Last 30 Years 1928-1958
Jehrio & Sprague • £19.35 • (B)

Looks at all the steam locomotives to be found on the B & O from 1928 till the end of steam, grouped by wheel arrangement, so you go from 0-4-0 switchers, through 4-4-0s upwards to the just post-war “Yellowstone” articulateds, with B & W photos and a weight diagram drawing for each class, plus there is a short section on the various experimental locos the B & O tried out. B & O steam was almost universally handsome and this is a good value record of it, even if some of the photos are a bit murky. 128 pages. Around 230 photos. Hardbound. TLC

Chard Walker's Cajon - Rail Passage to the Pacific
Walker • £37.95 • (A)

Cajon Pass may not be the most spectacular scenic mountain crossing into California, but since opening in 1885 with then some 3% grades, it has always been a formidable challenge to the motive power, engineers and firemen of the UP and the Santa Fe, who share the trackage ( SP has its own trackage up the west side of the Pass). This is a new printing of a very good history of UP/SF operations over the Pass up to 1985, given considerable authenticity by the author having been an operator for many years at Summit, where helpers were turned, and he could observe, and frequently photograph, the constant procession of tonnage, troop trains and streamliners passing. 254 well produced pages. 334 photos (25 in colour) 14 maps. Hardbound. Signature Press

Canadian National Steam in Color Vol. 2: Ontario & West
Holland • £38.75 • (B)

By American standards, most Canadian locomotives were pretty small, but they all did their jobs very well. Canadian National’s roster was perhaps more typically American than Canadian Pacifics, especially as it had a fondness for ‘Northerns’ not shared by CP, but all its classes were distinctive. These two volumes show all the classes extant in the latter days of steam at work in the two areas in the titles; in the case of Volume 2 it has to be said that the eastern end of the area is better represented than the western. Around 250 good colour photos and 128 pages per volume. Hardbound. Morning Sun.

Canadian Pacific Steam in Color Vol. 1: Montreal & East
Holland • £38.75 • (B)

In the 1950s CP steam was very varied, especially in east of Canada the area covered here, where there were a lot of lightly laid branch lines, on which nothing heavier than 4-6-0s and, in a number of cases, 4-4-0s could be used - and modern power on some of these lines was semi-streamlined 4-4-4s. All, plus more conventional power for the period - Pacifics, Hudsons, Mikados and the like, are featured here, often in CP’s lovely maroon and black livery. 260 or so great colour photos. 128 pages. Hardbound. Morning Sun.

Canadian Pacific Steam in Color Vol. 2: Montreal & West
Holland • £38.75 • (B)

Here are more all colour photographs of CP steam, mainly in the 50s, but also a few years either side. Generally bigger engines as you head west, including the Selkirks, and also interesting shots on the second main line through the Rockies via the Kootenay Division. Canadian Pacific: Stand Fast Craigellachie!
McDonnell • £26.95 • (A)

For straight quality with a capital ‘Q’ and value with a capital ‘V’, this book really is hard to beat. You may have to be a Scot or a CP man to understand the exact significance of the sub-title, but don’t let this put you off this lovely book which roams over the whole of the Canadian Pacific system from the 1950s on into the 21st century with a good text and 350 colour photos and 50 B & W ones. All are excellent and come from a wide number of the best north American photographers, as well as the author. The Canadian Pacific really did define Canada in a way no other railway has done in other countries - here it is celebrated in all its glory and considerable style.
