Armstrong Whitworth a pioneer of world diesel traction
£19.95

In the years between the two World Wars, one of the pioneers of diesel traction, and especially diesel-electric traction, were Armstrong, Whitworth & Co, in Newcastle upon Tyne . Success came with ‘mobile powerhouses’, initially built for the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway, following an idea of its CME Pedro C. Saccaggio where, in effect, the locomotive, or ‘powerhouse’ diesel engines powered generators which powered electric motors on the ‘powerhouse’ and spread throughout the train. This idea was used on a number of sets for Argentina, and for Brazil, but was not otherwise common, although it resurfaced on the British Railways 'Blue Pullman' sets. Subsequently diesel-electric railcars were built for the LNER and for export, as well as conventional locomotives, including a wide range of shunters. Production ceased on the outbreak of WW11. This is a most interesting story, very well told here with considerable accessible detail. 181 well produced pages. Large numbers of photographs, some in colour, and drawings in either 4mm or 7mm to the foot scale. Harbound. RCTS & Lightmoor Press
