First published in 1973, this really is one of the best autobiographies written by a footplateman from the days of steam. Bill Morgan joined the GWR as a cleaner at Neyland Shed in Pembrokeshire in 1916, and retired nearly 50 years later as a British Railways’ Top Link driver on the newly-introduced diesels from Gloucester. This lovely book, written with his daughter, tells of Bill’s rise through the ranks, and adventures on the footplate, but its strength is that it also tells of the linked life off the footplate. A ‘classic’ in every way. 222 pages. 36 B&W photos. Hardbound. KRB Publication
