This set contains two programmes from the BBC’s ‘World About Us’ series, following a three lorry Astran convoy from the UK to Doha in Quatar back in 1977. If you read the book The Long Haul Pioneers you will find minor liberties were taken, mainly in regard to drivers, but what you see is what they did. Part One - ‘The Easy Bit’ follows the group’s fortunes across Europe to Istanbul, whilst Part Two - ‘The Difficult Bit’ covers the dangerous roads on to Ankara and across the Taurus mountains, then through Syria and the deserts of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Because of its length, this is a relatively slow-moving film, but you steadily become more and more engrossed with the likeable drivers and understand how their work was more than a job - it was a way of life with a strong sense of adventure. Excellent value and good viewing
