During the somewhat sorry saga of BR’s dieselisation, the main testing ground seems to have been the Scottish Region, over whose metals ran just about every diesel-electric locomotive design bar the ‘Baby Deltics’, and every type of DMU, railbus and railcar design, anyone could dream up. Some were to have successful and long lives, but other designs - the Metrovick Bo-Cos, the Claytons and the various NBL designs failed, leaked oil and generally disgraced themselves wherever they went. And they are all - the good, the bad and the ugly, here in the 697 B&W photos in this book, the majority of which date from the mid 50s to the early 1970s, although some are from later in the BR era. The fact the very good pictures were taken in Scotland is irrelevant; if you like British Railways’ diesels, especially during the transition from steam, you will love this. And there is so much general detail here it is good for the modeller as well. 308 well produced and hardbound pages. Clyard Novella.
