Brabazon - the beautiful dream • DVD • App. 70 mins • B&W and colour
£12.95

In September 1949, the largest land plane ever to be constructed in Britain took to the skies, under the control of test pilot Bill Pegg. The 230ft wingspan of the Bristol Brabazon MK 1 cast shadows upon thousands of spectators, who were witnessing the fruition of a £12m project. Designed to convey 100 passengers across the Atlantic in complete luxury, by the time it was complete the more utilitarian Lockheed Constellation and Douglas DC4 had taken the market. When cancelled in 1953, the giant machine had logged 400 hours of flight test, but it would never fulfil the crossing to North America. Using unique archive footage, and photographs, you can now re-live the Brabazon's full and fascinating history, from its conception in 1943 through to its demise ten years later. This is an expanded re-release of a video, and occasionally it shows, but overall is fascinating, both for the aircraft itself, and the considerable infrastructure built at Filton for its construction.
