If the subject of this book is known at all, it is in connection with the rebuilding of the Bulleid Pacifics, but Ron Jarvis had an extraordinarily varied and interesting career, even if he never quite reached the very top of the engineering ranks. Starting on the LMS he was involved with its articulated 3-car diesel unit, assembled Stanier 8Fs in Turkey during the war, was involved with the Southern’s diesels and the BR Standard steam locomotives before ending his career working on the prototype HST.
