£36.92

Excellent film looking at the history of the two families of French 4-8-2s - the Est/Etat version, and the PLM one, including its lineal descendant, the SNCF’s 241 P class. Also briefly covered is the Etat’s own solitary, and unsuccesful, example and its subsequent rebuilding by Chapelon into 242 A1.  Around half of this film is archive material on each type, much dating back to the 1930s, and including newsreels of the period, covering both the locomotives introduction, and the disasters they were involved in. The rest of the film looks at the preserved examples of the two types, both in Mulhouse museum, and in action; this latter includes 241 A65 and 241 P 17 double heading in Switzerland, as well as long sequences on each engine individually. Highly enjoyable 90 minutes in the company of Europe’s largest standard gauge locomotives., even if one is left wondering why the owners insist on running their locomotives with a 4 wheel coal waggon directly behind their locomotive's tender 95% of the time!
