As far as I know this is the first English language book devoted to oneof the most spectacular railways, standard or narrow gauge in the world-the 950mm gauge Ferrovie Eritrée which climbs to nearly 8000feet in 73 miles, from the coast at Massawa above the Horn of Africa,to Eritrea’s capital Asmara. Originally built at great expense by theItalians, the line was largely destroyed during Eritrea’s wars withEthiopia, but has been restored and reopened by local efforts, including many by former railway workers in their 70s and 80s. The line is again operational, mainly using the orginal 0-4-0+0-4-0mallet tanks as a result. This book shows the reinstatement of theline, and how it, its workers and rolling stock appear today.
