In its day this was notorious as an unusually realistic and tough thriller; nowadays it enjoys cult status as the first British film to have these attributes. In part this arises from the coming together of a whole host of the new, tough, breed of British actor - stars Stanley Baker and Patrick McGoohan, plus Herbert Lom, David McCallum, and a very young Sean Connery, and a host of gentler others - William Hartnell, Sid James, Wilfrid Lawson, Gordon Jackson, Alfie Bass, with Peggy Cummins, Jill Ireland and Vera Day as the female interest. Whilst supposedly based on fact, the story, about competition between drivers on short-distance gravel lorries is basic; the Bedford/Dodge trucks don't get a chance, as they are frequently speeded-up, but the acting is as good as one would expect from such a cast. This excellent value, double disc set, also includes a lot of extras, mainly concentrating on the film itself and Stanley Baker, but also including an episode of Danger Man, which starred Patrick McGoohan.
