West Virginia’s coal and lumber carrying BC&GRR occupies a far more considerable place in American railroad history than its scenic 18.6 miles length would suggest.
To start with it was the last standard-gauge, steam powered common carrier in the land, the last run taking place on the 27th February 1965. It also had a linked logging line, the Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. which had Shays and a Climax in service into the 1960s, and which was famed for wading through streams in certain locations. The BC&GRR also used 1920s Mack railbuses for many passenger services and, to the very end, kept its steam power as clean as coal hauling and burning allowed.
This is really a lovely celebration of what must have been a lovely little pair of railroads - and a modeller’s dream. 128 pages. Around 250 photos, the vast majority in colour. Hardbound. Morning Sun
