West Highland (1960 - B&W) is the lead film on this DVD, and alone worth the price. It shows a day’s operations on the West Highland Line, from Glasgow Queens Street to Mallaig when the motive power was still steam - B1s, K1s, Black Fives, and a couple of NBR 0-6-0 and 4-4-2s. Made by the BBC, the director John Gray was ex GPO Film Unit, and the Night Mail influences are visible, but there is much more, including stunning aerial shots on Rannoch Moor. Definitely a BUY!
The other three films are: A Line For All Seasons (1980 - colour) - showing operations on the by then diesel powered West Highland, and the surrounding scenery, as the seasons change. West Of Inverness (1939 - B&W) is about the problems faced by a rural community and the growing importance of the railway from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh to communities threatened by depopulation. The Line To Skye (1973) is an Eddie McConnell film made to support the retention of the line from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh at a time when it was threatened with closure.
Taken together these films live up to the DVD’s sub-title very well!
