Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (2 disc set) 1967 126 mins (2) DVD
£22.99

By 1967 the Hollywood musical in its traditional form was dead, but  French director Jacques Demy gave it a glorious 'Last Hurrah' in this unabashedly romantic paean to American energy and optimism that’s quintessentially French. The delightfully light-hearted story unfolds over the course of one weekend in the picturesque seaside town of Rochefort, and centres on twin sisters Delphine and Solange (played by real life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac) who, tired of their humdrum existence, dream of finding success and romance in Paris. Little do they know that their perfect love may just be around the corner. The superb ensemble weave and wander around town, looking for and just missing the love of their lives. Will the happy pairs of lovers be united or will cruel fate keep them apart? The Americans - Kelly and especially George Chakiris and Grover Dale, supply the core of the dancing, but the sisters more than hold there own, and there are plenty of others - indeed at times the whole town of Rochefort seems to be dancing! This is a tremendously warm film, with a magnificent jazz score by Michel Legrand. In French, with subtitles. There are also 91 minutes of additional material looking at the film 25 years after it was made, an interview with Catherine Deneuve, and audio of Gene Kelly talking on the Hollywood musical.

If we offer anything with a higher "Feel Good" factor than this, we don't know what it is!
