The result of a decade’s work this is, simply, a quite magnificent book. Author Jim MacIntosh has reviewed several thousand photographs, trawled through contemporary publications and original paint specifications, as well as undertaken heraldic research in writing this book - and it shows. Does he settle the arguments over the exact shade of blue the ‘Caley’ painted his locomotives? Not entirely, but even so, few railway’s livery can have been covered in such depth. And even if you are only slightly interested in the livery details, there are hundreds of B&W, and some colour, photographs of Caledonian Railway locomotives, carriages and good wagons here, the vast majority showing considerable detail. Great book! 328 well produced, heavily illustrated, pages. Hardbound. Lightmoor Press
