DVD Cruachan: the hollow mountain • 81 mins • B & W and colour •

Two tremendous films dealing with hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. The first, The Moriston Project (33 mins) is about the building of the Glen Moriston dam by Mitchell Construction between 1952 and 1956, and shows plenty of machinery, as well as explanations of construction techniques and footage underground. Cruachan (48 minutes) from 1966 covers the construction of the large pumped-storage hydro-electric scheme by Loch Awe, much of which was actually inside Cruachan. Engineering detail is strong, including the manufacture of steel castings, cables, circuit breakers and switch gear. Good film about a great project.
