Told here in considerable detail is the story of the George Hughes and William Stanier designs of 2-6-0 for the LMS. Very much an L&Y design, Fowler managed to get some Midland features included in Hughes's design, amongst which was a tender narrower than the locomotive. Very successful, the “Crabs” performed many of the passenger duties to be taken over by the larger Black 5s when they arrived, but the LMS needed more moguls, and the Stanier version appeared, but in much smaller numbers. 208 well produced pages, including 12 of colour photos. 147 B & W photos. Some drawings. Hardbound. RCTS
