The Kent Coalfield was the last and shortest lived coalfield in the UK, largely established by the efforts of two men - Arthur Burr and Richard Tilden-Smith during the first part of the twentieth century. Covered in this well produced book is the whole 100 year history of the coalfield, and especially its successful mines, Tilmanstone, Snowdown, Chislet and Betteshanger. Because the industry was started so late, there was no local tradition of mining, so the miners were recruited from other distant coalfields, brought to the quiet and prosperous agriculutural county of Kent, where there were troubles with their integration - hence this book's title. In both industrial and social terms, a very worthwhile and readable book. 96 pages. Around 200 B&W photos. Paperback. Stenlake Publishing.
