Locomotive 4501

£10.50

The biography of Southern Railway (of America) 2-8-2 Mikado No. 4501 which, after decades of hauling freight on the Southern and subsequently on a shortline, found itself rescued in the nick-of-time from the scrapers by a Du Pont researcher.

Somewhat improbably he managed to get 4701 fully restored to working order, and painted in the Southern Railway's famed green livery. In 1966 she made her return to the mainline, the first privately owned engine to do so, to a large extent the starting point for steam preservation in the USA.

Written by one of the great writers on America railroading, David P. Morgan, long-time editor of Trains magazine, this tells of 4501's life up until 1968 when this book was published.
