Rails Around Lake Tahoe - Steam Trains and Steamboats
Lake Tahoe is a very considerable stretch of water astride the California/Nevada border, drained to the north by the Truckee river. Like the Truckee basin, the Tahoe area had a number of railroads, mainly 3 foot gauge, but these resulted from logging, rather than mining as was the case in Truckee.
The railroads, the logging companies and their flumes, as well as the passenger steamboats on the lake are well covered here, by well known writer on such things, Mallory Hope Ferrell.
An enjoyable book on the old West, crammed with around 500 B&W photos of ballon-stacked locos, society belles, mustachioed men and nary a stetson in sight. Includes numerous maps, track diagrams etc. 256 harbound pages.
