A beautiful book, albeit with a misleading name as the first governors were used to control wind and water mills used for grinding corn and other seeds.

These are well covered, but whilst the bulk of this book is devoted to governors on steam engines, largely stationary, but including traction engines and portables, a final section covers governors fitted to earlier IC or oil engines.

Well written and interesting, especially when it comes to the creation of very sensitive governors, which maintained a very steady speed, with 'hunting'.

Also includes listings of British governor makers and suppliers, and places to see governors at work.

160 very well produced and illustrated pages, many in colour. Hardbound.

A valuable addition to books on industrial and steam technology.
