Kerr, Stuart's Internal Combustion Locomotives
Unlike the steam locomotives they produced for industrial use, Kerr, Stuart had a reasonable measure of success with IC powered locomotives for similar service.
The prototype diesel locomotive, maker's number 4415 appeared in 1928, and after a long and peripatetic life is now being restored on the Ffestiniog Railway. Only two standard gauge locomotives were built, and the first (works number 4421) emerged in 1929 and went to the Ravenglass & Eskdale railway to run on the first, two and a half mile dual-tracked section up to the crushing plant at Murthwaite. It has also survived. As will be evident, most of the firm's production was narrow gauge, across three horsepower classes; all described here.
Considerable quantities of drawings both of locomotives, parts thereof and engines, plus numerous B&W photos, and a good text, make for an informative read.
