Southern Pacific’s Shasta Route circa 1950 - Vol. 1 • 62 mins • mostly colour
This fascinating DVD covers the Californian section of SP’s north-south West Coast Route, from the Bay Area to Portland, Oregon. With its steep gradients this required heavy power and multiple helpers; cab-forwards are prominent, and have a special section devoted to them.
Also featured is the Siskiyou Line to Grants Pass, and the McLeod River RR.
Very largely steam power, but PAs and other first-generation diesel power does creep in from time to time.
