Stone to Build London (SALE)
The stone used to build many of London’s building, from the rebuilding which followed the Great Fire of London to the present day, use ‘Freestone’ cut from the tiny Island of Portland off the Dorset coast.
This really very interesting book covers the inter-related stories of the development of the quarrying industry on Portland, and the buildings which were built using the stone. Included are guides to Portland Stone built buildings, ancient and modern, to be found in London, and to an extent elsewhere in the world, and what to see of the industry on Portland itself.
A sumptuous book anyway, and a fascinating story. 309 large format pages, full of colour and B&W photographs, engravings and maps. Hardback.
