534 steam locomotives have operated on Swedens more than 100 narrow gauge railways. 221 of them came into SJ stock when the railways were nationalised, and SJ also built twelve 2-8-0s new. Standardisation was unheard of, and few locomotives were of the same type. 891mm, the indigenous Swedish 3ft, was the most common gauge, followed by 1,067, 600mm and several other gauges.
In his new book, Lars Olov Karlsson, former curator of the national railway museum, gives the historical background of each of the railway companies and lists all of their steam locomotives, with wheel arrangement, works number, details of renumberings, change of ownership and ultimate fate. The nearly 100 preserved locomotives are also listed. Swedish text. 368 pages 17x25 cm, 600+ photographs and drawings
