The Brave Don’t Cry 89 mins • B&W • DVD (SALE)
Made in 1952, this very good feature film reconstructs the mining disaster at Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery in Ayrshire two years previously, and the very difficult and long rescue of miners trapped underground after a pit shaft was flooded, and nine men were lost.
The rescue action alternates with events above ground, and notably the lives of the miners’ wives as they hope for their men to be rescued. Featuring actors from Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre, the best known today being Fulton Mackay, it also stars ex-alumni John Gregson.
Also on this DVD is a documentary on John Grierson, the film’s Executive Producer, and The Terrible Price (2004), a documentary on the Gresford mining disaster in South Wales, in which 266 miners lost their lives.
