The Steam Kyalami

Ridiculously cheap, superbly produced large format hardback book about ‘The Great Steam Racetrack thru the Great Karoo’ in South Africa - essentially the stretch of the Cape Town to Johannesburg mainline from Touws River to Kimberley.

The first seventy-one pages tell the history of the line, including during the Boer War, then forty-four pages tell of the motive power used, including an interesting section on ‘The Red Devil’. The remaining 138 pages are photos and stories of steam power on the Kyalami up to the end of steam and into preservation. This wasn’t a route which saw Garratts, being ruled latterly by the Class 25s 4-8-4s in condensing and non condensing versions.

252 pages heaving with B&W and colour photographs and excellent maps. If you like South African steam I guarantee you will like this!
