West Side - slim gauge logging in Tuolumne County • DVD • 70 mins • colour and B&W • dubbed sound

The West Side Lumber Company had a considerable 3’ gauge railroad extending from their mill at Tuolumne, on the Sierra Railroad, way up into inaccessible tracts of timber in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The length totalled 70 miles, of which more than 50 miles was the ‘main line’ over which Shay’s, plus a limited number of Heislers, pulled their trains over terrifyingly high trestles and through spectacular scenery.

The line operated until 1962, and is arguably the best known of all American logging railroads; it was certainly quite an operation, and this lovely collection of well shot archive film does it full justice.

Highly recommended!
