William Watkins Limited - London's First Major Towage Company
William Watkins Ltd was founded on the Thames in 1833 and the family continued in towage for 140 years
Their first tug Monarch is shown in Turner's famous painting 'The Fighting Temeraire" and detailed here are all the tugs owned or operated by the Company. These roamed far and wide - in 1875 Watkin's Anglia towed the Union liner Syria from St. Helena to Southampton and there is an account by Fierman Len Smith of how he essentially cruised round the world in two years, starting in 1946 on two of the Company's tugs.
Also described in some detail are the major role the Company and its tugs played in both World Wars.
All in all, a fascinating read and highly recommended for everyone who has an interest in tugs, notably their development.
