African Steam Safari Albert Falls to Asmara

£32.95

First of a projected three volumes of colour photographs of steam locomotives around the African Continent from the late 1960’s on.

The first 37 pages of this volume cover the SAR Cape gauge lines in Natal running north/south through Pietermaritzburg, with Garratts of various classes hard at work. There then follow 17 pages on the then recently opened Swaziland Railway which used hired-in engines from the Mozambique railways, including the very handsome, American built, 700 class 4-8-2s. Following this you get 21 pages of industrial steam in South Africa, mainly, but not exclusively, ex SAR classes.

Finally there are 40 pages on the rebuilt Eritrea Railway, with photographs and reminiscences from various tours in the early 21st Century; photographs taken in the earlier chapters are of commercial steam.

The photographs and the quality of the reproduction are superb, and most of the pictures are reproduced at half page or larger sizes. Photographs in the first three sections were almost all taken on film. The Eritrea photographs are digital.120 pages of quality enjoyment, all the way from Australia!
