Montague Smith's Scottish Railway Album 1927-1964

£15.00

Generally excellent B&W photographs taken by a photographer I hadn't knowingly come across before, covering a 37 year period on a small area of Scotland's railways, from Glagow southwards on the WCML to Symington Junaction, and up the Peebles branch to Biggar.

The period covered extended from just five years after the formation of the 'Big Four' at the Grouping, well into the British Railway's era, and the spread of the locomotive designs seen is extensive. McIntosh & Pickersgill 4-4-0s are in the majority, but here are also other Caledonian classes, others from the G&SWR, the North British, the LMS, the LNER, one from the Southern Railway, plus British Railways standard designs.

Many of Smith's photographs feature the locomotive crews, or the station staff, and he noted their name's down, and they are given here, preserving them for posterity. And he would give copies whenever possible - a nice touch.

A lovely 112 page paperback book, with upwards of 260 photographs, plus maps.
