In fact the magnificent "Iron Duke" class, the first of which appeared in 1848 were to be the epitomy of broad gauge steam express power until the end of the broad gauge, even if much improved over their lifetime.
As well as the locomotive stock, Gooch's building of Swindown works is covered in considerable detail.
Very interesting, as are the earlier two volumes in the series; erudite and highly readable.
