This is the first Volume chronologically, of Jack Hampshires memoirs of his life with road steam, but the second by publication.

In it he recounts his many adventures serving his apprenticeship with Carr Bros. at Adversane in Sussex, largely but not entirely working on steam. It is a remarkable window into what country life was like in the years before the First World War.

This is a great read, full of fun and laughter, as Jack and his friends learn their trades, and highly recomended, as are Jack's other two books:
